Maltese Cross... and they should be!

Yesterday was as beautiful sunny day that lead us into the historic port of Valletta, Malta.  Being a strategic naval point in the Med, it has been conquered by many Empires.  From the Ottoman’s to the British, the Maltese have fought and embraced various cultures and religions.  The most recent being Christianity providing many fantastic churches to visit throughout the walled in city.  Malta supported the Allied Forces in WWII and although the bombings left the city in ruins, they have rebuilt providing a truly unique place to visit.

The Maltese cross is the symbol for the country, and it is a even armed cross with 8 points, each point signifies a region where the original 8 Knights of St John came from to form the order.  You know, like the St John's Ambulance cross - which is a branch of that original order.

We wandered the walled in city of Valletta today, visiting forts, churches and shops.  We watched the remembrance day ceremony and spent some money at the amazing market.  We also took in a dog show for a bit – really!  I got to see 4 excellent examples of my favourite breed which is an ancient breed founded in Malta and is the official dog of Malta – and no, it is not the Maltese.  It is the Pharoah Hound, which is used for mainly rabbit hunting.  We saw a puppy and 3 adults, and it made my day.  Here is the puppy...

So how do you make a Maltese Cross?  You stand on his toes and poke him in the eyes!

Today we are at sea, heading to Egypt!
